Maras And Moray

Our tour of Maras, Moray, and the salt mines starts with a pick-up around 7:30 AM, followed by a scenic drive to the Moray archaeological site, where you’ll be surrounded by vast fields and majestic mountains.

Upon arrival, a guided tour will provide insights into Moray’s history and its role during the Inca era. The prevailing theory is that Moray served as an agricultural laboratory, featuring circular terraces designed in a staggered layout. The deepest terrace has a diameter of 80 meters and exhibits temperature variations ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 °C between each level, creating up to 20 unique microclimates. This setup likely allowed the Incas to cultivate crops that were otherwise unsuitable for the region.

After exploring Moray, we will head to the Maras Salt Mines, which comprise approximately 3,000 pools that yield between 50 and 80 kilograms of salt each season. Historically, these pools were used by the Incas to dehydrate foods for preservation. The salt is harvested from a spring that flows from deep within the mountain, with the locals extracting the salt once the sun evaporates the water.

Maras salt, renowned for its high mineral content and medicinal properties, is particularly sought after, especially the pink variety.

On our way back to Cusco, we will stop in Chinchero to visit an alpaca factory, where you can witness the entire alpaca production process.
